Rocks, 300 gramms, Cast in Resin & Iron
I came across the Olduvai handaxe in the history of the world in 100 objects. It is made out of green volcanic lava about 1.6 million years ago as one of the earliest humanly made tool. It first appeared me as a piece of rubbles, negligible, something that I will pay no attention to if I found one in the field. It made me wondered that visual perception, although vivid, somehow deceptive. In a design process, being visually orientated is attractive, but it is rather an ad hoc approach to creative practise. I reminded me of the design of opium weights, although they have different decorative forms, but still manage to be functional.
Weight aspect is often associated with the manufacturing process. It is invisible and yet highly influential. In this work, I cast a series of rocks, each of them weights 300 gamms. Each one is different in shapes, but consistent in weight. It is visually diverse, but since how it is made is not presented–as the weight itself–The idea becomes incomprehensible by pure observation, it becomes insignificant, like an ancient handaxe.
